There is a land of 90 square kilometres on the Danube between Batina, Croatia and Bezdan, Serbia, which is officially part of Croatia but lies on the Serbian bank of the river. The territory has now only nine inhabitants, all Croatian citizens with Hungarian origin. To reach the nearest Croatian village, Batina, they constantly need to cross the border checkpoint set on the bridge between the two countries. Due to the confused situation, they cannot sell their goods, nor are they allowed to hunt or fish. Moreover, they need to cross the river for basic public services such as healthcare. They have to cope completely on their own, between two countries.
